\nFor instance, a Portuguese migrant living in France can send part of their wage to family members living in Portugal.
\nAs these are transactions between residents and non-residents, remittances are recorded in the balance of payments. Each country records both remittance receipts and payments. In the case of the Portuguese balance of payments:
\nFor many countries, including Portugal, migrants’ remittance inflows are a major source of income for households. In Portugal, the amount of remittances received exceeds that of remittances paid. This means that Portugal’s remittances balance has been historically positive (the amounts recorded under ‘credit’ exceed those recorded under ‘debit’) and, therefore, remittances make a positive contribution to Portugal’s external accounts.
\nBanco de Portugal data show that Portuguese migrants regularly send remittances to family members, thus maintaining close ties with the country. In 2023, Portugal was the second European Union country with the largest amount of received remittances, as illustrated in the image below.

Portuguese migrants in Switzerland, France and the United Kingdom send the most remittances to Portugal. In 2024, migrants in these countries accounted for more than half of remittances received by Portuguese households.
\nBetween 2014 and 2024, France was surpassed by Switzerland, while Angola was surpassed by the United Kingdom among the main countries of origin of remittances.
\n\n\n
Brazilian migrants in Portugal send the most remittances to their home country. In 2024, remittances sent to Brazil, China and India corresponded to approximately 58% of total migrants’ remittance outflows.
\nWithin ten years, India replaced France in the podium of countries of destination of remittances sent by residents in Portugal.
\n\n\n
According to Banco de Portugal data, Portuguese migrants abroad send a larger amount of remittances in July and December.
\n\n\n
You can find information on remittances under the balance of payments sub-domain (external statistics domain). Migrants’ remittances are a component of the current account and are included in the secondary income account.
\nThe Banco de Portugal releases monthly series on remittances. In addition to total remittances sent and received, the Bank also publishes country-level data for a selected group of countries, which you can consult through the above maps.
\nIn BPstat, you can access the latest data on credits, debits and balance of migrants’ remittances.
\nYou can also access annual information (credit, debit or balance).
\nFor more information on the statistics on migrants’ remittances, see the Supplement to the Statistical Bulletin on the balance of payments and the international investment position statistics – Methodological notes and in the video below (both in Portuguese only).
